Hum Hearers
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:08:22 PM »
Some very interesting things have happened to me in the past and some very weird.  I will try to limit this thread to just ONE of the weird things that happens with me...

About 5 years ago, I lived in an apartment in Florida.  Everything was fine.  I came home one day and was working on the computer (drawing, writing poetry.. something - I'm an artist).  Suddenly, I "felt" a weird sensation all over my body and in my head.  It was like I was getting high but without any kind of drugs.  A deep "hum" within me seemed to correspond with the sensations.  Then, it would go away.  It would happen several times a day.  I was beginning to think I had some kind of brain tumor, but I noticed it only happened at home.  So, I started asking my neighbors.  They knew nothing about it.  It kept happening.  Then, a few days later, my neighbor's stove exploded!  So, I called the electric company.  They came out and said we had a bad transformer and they replaced it.  The weird sounds and sensations stopped...  so I thought...

For a year afterwards, I didn't have anymore of those sensations and I didn't hear anymore humming.  Then, I moved away from the big city and returned to the small town where I grew up.  That's when the "hum" started coming back, but without the "high" sensations - just the hum.  Sometimes, the hum was very low and not very noticeable.  Other times, the hum was unbearable and would drive me crazy.  There's a restaurant in town, that if I go to, everything will be fine.  Then, a machine would kick on and the hum would buzz inside my head.  It was annoying.  It would do this EVERY time I'd visit this restaurant.  I figured it was the ice machine or something.  But, I would be the only one at the table that could hear it.  And it was less of a noise to me; it was more of a vibration in my head - felt like my whole head.  Then, one night, I layed down on my couch and tried to take a nap.  Suddenly, I hear the hum.  It's so loud that I can't ignore it.  I can hear it changing pitch, like it's shifting "gears" or something.  Then, it stops for a moment.  Then, it starts up again.  Over and over.... Hum-hum-hum-silence..........hum-hum-hum.....  It's driving me crazy!!  It almost hurts.  I can't sleep.  I'm so frustrated.  Remembering the "machine" at the restaurant, I'm determined to find the source of this humming noise!!  So, I start going around the room looking for the humming sound.  I can't find where it's coming from...  It sounds like it's all over.  Then, as I'm passing the front of my tv, I hear a little switching sound with my ears.  It corresponded with the humming sound in my head!  I leaned closer... it was my PlayStation!  I had inadvertently left it on and the disk was inside spinning and being read!  I shut off the PlayStation and the humming stopped as well as the switching sound!

Some time later, I moved even further out into the country.  The humming is constant and intrusive.  All day long, I suffer the hum.  I have to turn a fan on just to soften the hum.  I turn the tv on to further hide the "sound" (I hate tv - that's how bad the hum is).  I can't sleep at night without the bathroom fan on because the hum is so loud, it's like it's inside my head and vibrating - almost hurts sometimes.  After several months, my girlfriend and I move to another part of the county.  No hum except only occasionally.

What's the deal?  She doesn't hear it.  My friends don't hear it....  Only me...  Ya think this might have anything to do with the transformer back in Florida?

Weird.

I once saw a show about a really big fish that made loud humming noises in mating season.  The whole section of town near the shoreline couldn't sleep for a week!

I can also hear what sounds like a substation transformer in my head! At first I noticed it about 1 year ago while trying to sleep and thought it was coming from outside. Over the months I am realising it is actually coming from inside my head. My wife can't hear it. I tend to notice it when I am in a quiet house. I can interrupt the sound for a slpit second by shaking my head slighty.

My conclusion from this is that the buzzing could caused by some kind of resonance of bones in my head, ears, teeth or fillings. Is this possible? And could the resonating be caused by some environmental hum being picked inside my head e.g 50hertz hum, radio wave or microwaves?

I hear the hum. Its so bad I cannot sleep anymore. I spend all night tossing and turning and can never sleep. It has become so loud that even the earphones that bose has with the white noise does not drown out the hum. I am freaking out thinking I am probably being radiated from some transformer near by, but I have checked and the only one is underground, across the street. I can hear the hum in every room in the house. More so in my room and my little girls room. Outside the hum dissapears. Its gotton so bad that I can hear the hum during the day. At night its so bad that there are moments when I think I am going to freak out and start screaming. I cannot drown out the hum. I am not emotionally unstable. I have a healthy family life. My husband is the best in the world. yet, I hear this hum and no one else can. What is wrong? What could it be? Why can I not hear it outside? Why only inside? Why is it louder in my room than the rest?

I too have heard this exact sound described by others here.  I notice a pattern of earthquakes and other catastrophic events associated with it when it gets really loud.  This started in 97 as an oscillating noise  kind of like a engine in the distance.  Now it is like a big power transformer.  Always present and at times very loud.

I've read all of your posts and several others from other websites.  This is a worldwide phenomena that is present in several countries and has been documented since the 1960's (see links below).  There are various theories behind its origin also.

I too am able to hear this maddening "thrum" or "hum" at different times of the day or night.  I have heard it most often in the evening when I return home from work and park in my garage.  I can only describe it as an extremely low frequency, resonant hum.  It it sometimes present with enough sound energy to make it feel as if my eardrums are pulsing like a subwoofer reproducing a loud, heavy bass tone.  At other times, it is barely audible, but still noticeable.  It is VERY frustrating to not be able to locate the source of this "noise" and be able to shut it down.  I have also noticed that the sound seems to be amplified inside structures as the sound is definitely louder within an enclosed space, like my garage or my bedroom, rather than outside on my front lawn.

Several factors lead me to firmly believe that this sound is man-made.  It seems to stop and start with a switch-like precision as contributor brasskey described.  I have noted that the sound will be pervasive, seeming to be everywhere and nowhere all at once, and then just simply stop like someone flipped a switch and/or shutdown some equipment.  In my experience, this sound will be present for as little as a few hours to several days on end and then cease as abruptly as it began.  The sound kept me awake one night, so I got dressed and drove around the surrounding area trying to locate the source.  I drove as far as 3 miles from my house and could still hear the sound, but I could not locate the source or gain an clue as to the direction it was radiating from.  As with all low frequency tones, it will be difficult to find the source because they tend to travel through materials rather than be absorbed by them.

I have listed some links to other sites I have visited concerning "The Hum".

I'm about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA.  Been noticing the hum since I moved here 10 years ago, but always wrote it off as far off trains.  That was until about 6-7 years ago, it got so much louder at night that I asked neighbors if that train noise was bothering them.  They told me told me they couldn't hear it.  I thought, "you must be kidding... it's maddening".  Finally, one day in my house, I asked a friend if they could hear it, but they couldn't.  I thought I must have high blood pressure or something...nope.  Always been an audiophile (which requires expensive equipment to satisfy), had sensitive hearing, so good I mumble (to other people, to me I sound loud).  Like everyone else, is louder inside, louder at night usually.. but lately, it's been louder in daytime (I'm in home office all day).  Is even loud in my driveway (without the car running), in the car and out.  LOUDER IN MY RIGHT EAR, even if I spin around.

Have a house on the river also, can hear it there, but it seems a lot farther away... not as intense.  My regular house is on top of a hill about 1289 feet elevation in the woods, rural area mostly.  Today and last week's hum seems to be higher pitched and "faster" undulations... not as low pitched bass as before.  As far as genetic, my 12 year old daughter can't hear it.  I have the Viking genetic hand problem "dupuytren's contracture" or curling of pinky/ring fingers.  Wonder if that has something to do with who's hearing it?  Just a thought.  Anyone have a strange small movable hard lump behind their ear that's been there for many years without changing?  Another thought... Anyone woken up at night by someone calling their name (softly, in their ear)?  Must be a reason we are the only ones hearing it.... There HAS been alot of UFO sightings in our area... perhaps they hear it too... or causing it?  Please share your strange happenings so we can compare the common ones amongst the "hum hearers".

Hi, this is my first time on one of these but I came across this when searching on Google so here goes... For the last few nights, I have also experienced this very low pitched 'hum' and it is driving me crazy! My wife cannot hear it at all and I was starting to doubt whether it was 'real' or tinnitus or something else. It is reassuring to hear that I am not alone. I have checked round the house, switched off appliances, etc, but nothing gets rid of it and I cannot pin-point where it is coming from. It sometimes sounds like there are two different pitches that alternate every few seconds - does anyone else get this? I must admit, I haven't tried going outside at night yet to see it still sounds as loud, but I will try that soon if it persists. Putting ear plugs in does not make it go away. I live in North Lincolnshire, UK - has anyone else in this vicinity experienced this?

I  found this site after getting frustrated with this low hum I can hear too. Sometimes I think I am going crazy or I have some form of tinnitus. I also tried switching everything off in my house but that did not make a difference. I also put my ear to the wall but I cannot hear it coming from there. The sound is like a far of train and sometimes I can hear what sounds like and engine under load. I live in a semi-remote area on a mountain top in a small house. The sound is constant and really bothers me. I have read that the it was recently discovered that the earth hums. I am wondering if this might be that hum.

My God, I hear this thing too and it's driving me insane.  What's more, I didn't hear it until Christmas day, just a few days ago.  Has anyone suffered from this for years?  Does it go away, come back in spurts, what?  I literally feel like I'm losing my mind!

Yes midcow, it is driving me insane too. I do remember hearing this some time ago, perhaps last summer. But then it went away. Now it is back. There is a water pump station down at the base of the mountain where I live here in British Columbia and so I was starting to think it may be coming from that. But now I am starting to believe it is actually in my head. I was listening to some very loud music a few weeks back when I was testing out some new speakers and now I am thinking I permenantly damaged my hearing. Perhaps it really is tinnitus. However, when I cover my ears with hearing muffs I do not hear the droning rumble so much, if at all. So I am not really certain now. I will have to try and go somewhere else that is quiet.
It continue to investigate but have found nothing yet to explain the sound. My son was here and he said he could not hear it. The sound is very loud.
It seems to be only in the house and my shed. I can`t hear it outside. The sound seems to stumble at times. Is this the same low-intensity sound everyone else is hearing?

It is now the end of January 2009 and the hum continues. A friend was over and I asked him if he could hear it and he said yes. He thought it might be my furnace but I have no furnace. This hum is relentless and is the same sound that other hum hearers describe. It sounds like a diesel engine in the distance. It is loudest in the house or in my shed. Sometimes the volume is reduced but it never goes away. When I go to bed I have to use and MP3 player with a low frequency sound playing to drown out the hum. This is a very strange phenomena and is somewhat disturbing. I hope it eventually goes away.
